Thermoplastic CompositesVESTOSINT® fine powders are eminently suited for the manufacture of thermoplastic composites of glass, carbon, aramide or steel fibers. Unlike duroplastic materials, they are subsequently formable. They can be wrapped, pressed, laminated, woven, and so forth.
ProcessesDepending on the desired type of composite material, various manufacturing processes are used.
Scattering ProcessThanks to their round particle shape, VESTOSINT® powders possess excellent flowability. For this reason, they can be applied by the scattering process and can be melted in a downstream oven. The use of calenders ensures intensive impregnation of the filaments or fabric. This process is particularly suitable for fabrics with large surface areas. Spray ProcessAs with electrostatic powder coating, the powder is sprayed with a spray gun onto strips, which are widened to individual filaments in the coating space. By heating to temperatures above the melting point, a bond is obtained between the reinforcing fiber and the VESTOSINT® powder. This process is particularly suitable for strips. Suspension ProcessAnother method for manufacturing composites is impregnation with an aqueous VESTOSINT® suspension. In this case, very fine powders can be used, making high fiber volume contents achievable. |
